Former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has addressed recent speculation. He dismissed claims that his international football retirement was forced. Instead, Troost-Ekong stated his exit was purely a personal decision.
Troost-Ekong quickly countered these rumours on Friday. He responded directly to posts on 𝕏. These posts suggested punishment for criticising the federation. Others implied he was frozen out by internal politics.
He firmly stated, “Not true! This was my own choice and decision. I made it on my own terms. No one ever asked or tried to force me out.” He added, “If anything, the opposite happened when I shared my decision.” Troost-Ekong expressed his support: “I wish the team all the best. I support them, along with all Nigerians, for the upcoming AFCON. I hope they go all the way.”
Responding to another post, he reiterated his stance. He confirmed that only his own judgment influenced his departure. Troost-Ekong wrote, “This just isn’t true, my friend!” He continued, “I retired on my own terms. I did so for my own reasons. None of the mentioned factors were involved.” He concluded by saying, “Wish you all the best. My full support goes to Coach Chelle and the team for the upcoming AFCON.”
His announcement came shortly after. He was named in Nigeria’s provisional 54-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. This timing fueled speculation. Many believed he had been denied a fitting final appearance.
Troost-Ekong debuted for the Super Eagles in 2015. He switched allegiance from the Netherlands. The late Stephen Keshi was then coach. For nearly ten years, he remained a prominent defensive figure.
In his official retirement message, he stated, “Today, I’m announcing my retirement from international football.” He reflected on his journey. He had led Nigeria in World Cup qualifiers. He also played in friendlies and three AFCON tournaments.
Troost-Ekong noted, “Captaining the Super Eagles was beyond my wildest dreams.” He added, “Nigeria took me in. They trusted me to lead and represent a nation of over 230 million people.”
His international career included several major tournaments. He represented Nigeria at the 2016 Olympics. He also played in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Furthermore, he participated in three consecutive AFCONs. He won bronze in 2019 and silver in 2023. Troost-Ekong scored three goals at AFCON. This makes him the highest-scoring defender in the competition’s history.
