The internal crisis within Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated significantly on Friday as the faction supporting Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike dissolved the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) led by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara.
Announcing the decision before a closed-door meeting, faction representatives stated the dissolution aimed to restore constitutional order and ethical direction. They accused the Wabara-led BoT of abandoning its role as the party’s “moral compass” and losing credibility.
“The Board became divided and ineffective,” a spokesperson declared. “Its leadership faced serious credibility questions after Wabara’s alleged suspension by Abia State PDP for anti-party activities.”
The faction also criticized suspended National Chairman Umar Damagum for undermining party discipline. They accused him of protecting members who violated the PDP constitution and choosing “convenience over the rule of law.”
“When parties ignore their own constitution, they lose their soul,” the spokesperson emphasized. “This became our painful reality.”
The group praised members who sought court intervention to “save the PDP,” noting a recent Federal High Court ruling enabled the BoT reconstitution. “The judgment reminded us that no institution exceeds the law,” they stated.
Describing the newly inaugurated board as a “symbol of rebirth,” representatives stressed members were selected for integrity and commitment to party values rather than factional loyalty.
“This is sacred trust, not reward for loyalty,” they asserted. “New members must provide fair counsel and inspire confidence in our collective future.”
The faction attributed PDP’s decline to abandoning zoning principles before the 2015 elections. They pledged to prioritize transparency, judicial compliance, and internal democracy to rebuild public confidence.
“We’ll restore trust through transparent processes, court judgment respect, and fair congresses,” they vowed. “PDP must regain its position as Nigeria’s democratic conscience.”
The spokesperson declared an end to “hiding impunity under internal affairs,” stressing that party autonomy shouldn’t mean lawlessness. “Reform is essential to avoid irrelevance,” they concluded.
