FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has vowed to prevent the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from collapsing. He declared his commitment to saving the party.
Wike stated that he and other founding members would not let external forces destroy the PDP. He specifically referred to those who joined from other political parties.
The Minister accused a rival faction of violating court judgments. He called their recent convention “illegal.” Wike emphasized that the PDP must respect judicial processes. This is crucial for regaining public confidence.
Wike questioned the faction’s actions. He said, “You sued INEC at a State High Court. You sought an ex-parte order for the convention.” He added that this order overrode Federal High Court judgments. “How can you disobey two final judgments and still claim leadership?” he queried. Wike noted they held the convention despite court orders. Now, they seek Federal High Court recognition. He asked, “If INEC already recognizes you, why go to court again?”
Wike further accused the opposing faction of relying on propaganda. He warned against allowing selfish interests. Such interests, he stated, could destroy the party. The PDP has existed as a political platform since 1998.
“We must not let our party die,” Wike declared. He stressed that leadership demands commitment and honesty. “Propaganda is not the answer,” he added. “If we disrespect our own laws, how can Nigerians respect us?”
The FCT Minister urged all party faithful to unite. He called for support for lawful leadership. This unity, he said, would rebuild the PDP. It must align with democratic principles and judicial integrity.
Call for Caretaker Committee
Separately, a call has been made for a Caretaker Committee. The PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) received this urgent plea. The committee would guide the party forward. This is essential as the current National Working Committee’s tenure expires soon.
Senator Mao Ohuabunwa made the appeal. He is the factional Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman. Ohuabunwa spoke at the party’s 104th NEC meeting on Sunday.
The BoT also noted ongoing efforts. Caretaker leaderships are being established in some states and zones. Examples include Anambra and the South-East. Congresses could not be held there previously. These efforts are vital, the BoT stated. They prevent leadership gaps and improve party organization.
