Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees, has declared Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri lacks constitutional legitimacy after abandoning the PDP and declaring himself “partyless.”
The former Senate President condemned Diri’s actions as unconstitutional, noting Nigeria’s laws don’t recognize independent candidacy. “Our constitution doesn’t accommodate independent runs. A governor abandoning his party platform commits an impeachable offence,” Wabara stated.
Wabara argued that by leaving the PDP without joining another party, Diri automatically forfeited his governorship. “How can he remain governor without a political platform? Nigeria’s constitution doesn’t recognize such arrangements,” he questioned.
The PDP leader characterized the situation as undemocratic. “There’s no government in Bayelsa State. There’s no democracy there,” he asserted, emphasizing that Diri’s position violates constitutional provisions.
Despite the crisis, Wabara expressed optimism about PDP’s resurgence before 2027 elections. He predicted defectors would return and urged members nationwide to remain steadfast, calling PDP “Nigeria’s only credible alternative for good governance.”
