An expatriate Nigerian in the US shared a key factor. It led to the safe release of 38 church members. These worshippers were abducted from the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Kwara State.
Harrowing Days in Captivity
Suspected bandits seized the church members on Tuesday, November 18, during a service. They endured five days as captives. Their release came on Sunday, November 24. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu confirmed this on his X page. This brought significant relief to their families and the local community.
US-Based Insight
Michael Taiwo, an American-based Nigerian, commented on the development via his X account. He attributed the victims’ safety to one critical element. Taiwo suggested the event might have had a tragic conclusion without international scrutiny.
The Impact of Global Exposure
Taiwo highlighted a globally viral video of the attack. He stated it was crucial for the victims’ freedom. He wrote: “This video protected the kidnapped worshippers. If this terror act had not been globally publicized, it wouldn’t have generated such international pressure.” He noted major U.S. news channels broadcast the footage. This garnered global awareness and rapid intervention.
Critique of Domestic Authorities
Taiwo also criticized Nigerian authorities. He implied that the worshippers might still be held without international focus. He asserted, “The Nigerian government shows a disheartening lack of concern. These individuals would have been abandoned without U.S. pressure.”
