A social media user ignited public debate. He alleged that police officers guarding Very Important Persons (VIPs) now wear suits. This reportedly helps them avoid public scrutiny. The claim suggests they are circumventing President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive.
President Tinubu had ordered the withdrawal of police details from VIPs. This decision earned widespread praise from many Nigerians. However, some people voiced concerns about its practical implementation.
VIPs Accused of Evading Security Directives
Days after the presidential order, the Nigerian Police Force announced the withdrawal of officers attached to VIPs. Yet, an X (formerly Twitter) user, known as Ayekooto, claimed some VIPs ignored this instruction. He alleged their attached officers now wear business suits. This reportedly conceals their official status from public view.
Ayekooto explicitly stated: “Police officers with VIPs use a new tactic. They wear suits instead of uniforms. This avoids public attention. It follows President Tinubu’s directive. The Inspector General should investigate this. No officer or VIP should defy the Commander-in-Chief.”

Public Response to the Allegations
The post generated diverse reactions from Nigerians online. Many people quickly shared their perspectives.
Ademola Alaniyi highlighted perceived police benefits. He mentioned free food, constant electricity, and financial gains. He questioned why officers would willingly relinquish these perks. His comment underscored the strong incentives for staying attached to VIPs.
Odunayo advocated for strict enforcement. He argued that officers must face disciplinary action for disobedience. Otherwise, they will continue to disregard directives with impunity. This suggests a need for clear consequences.
Akinnagbe raised concerns about data. He wondered if the Inspector General truly knows the exact number of officers still with VIPs. He suggested this lack of data might impede effective policy enforcement.
Solace2mins critically questioned the Inspector General’s authority. They asked why the IG cannot enforce the withdrawal order. The user linked this issue to broader problems, including past police brutality. They noted it took protests to dismantle SARS.
Kolawole Kihinde criticized both VIPs and law enforcement agents. He questioned why VIPs resist proper conduct. He also highlighted the unruly behavior attributed to some agents. His comment reflected widespread public frustration.
