Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has withdrawn from tonight’s CAF Awards ceremony in Rabat. The 2023 African Player of the Year requires immediate medical attention for a hamstring injury sustained during Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers. He returns to Galatasaray for scans instead of attending the event where he was nominated alongside Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi.
Osimhen exited at halftime during Nigeria’s playoff loss to DR Congo on Sunday. Team medics detected the muscle problem after his heroic performance against Gabon. There, his extra-time brace secured Nigeria’s final spot. This raised his international goal tally to 31.
Okoronkwo’s Award Disappointment
Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has expressed disappointment after missing the Women’s Player of the Year final shortlist. Despite initial inclusion among top contenders, CAF omitted her from the final three nominees. Rasheedat Ajibade, Ghizlaine Chebbak, and Sanaâ Mssoudy received nominations instead.
Okoronkwo responded on Instagram: “I remain grateful for Africa’s support. CAF’s decision is noted, but my focus stays on the pitch. Awards don’t always reflect reality, but performance never lies.”
Her credentials were formidable. Okoronkwo anchored Nigeria’s 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph. She delivered two goals and six assists during the tournament. Her Player of the Match performance in the final included a penalty goal and two assists.
At club level with AFC Toronto, she propelled her team to the Northern Super League Supporters’ Shield. Her eight goals and league-best seven assists included the title-winning assist against Montreal Roses. She made history as the first African to win the inaugural shield.
During CAF’s assessment period, Okoronkwo contributed to over 20 goals across competitions. She also secured two major trophies. Other nominees like Temwa Chawinga and Barbra Banda posted fewer goal contributions without silverware.
The CAF Awards ceremony begins at 6 p.m. Nigerian time today in Rabat.
