Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has shared his post-match reflections after Nigeria’s dramatic 4-1 victory over Gabon in Thursday’s World Cup qualifying playoff semi-final. The Galatasaray forward specifically addressed his late missed opportunity that nearly cost the team.
During stoppage time, Osimhen found himself one-on-one with Gabon goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba. A goal would have sealed Nigeria’s win in regulation time. Instead, his shot went wide, allowing Gabon to force extra time.
“When I missed that chance, I immediately asked my teammates about the rules,” Osimhen revealed in Rabat. “They confirmed we had extra time. I told them, ‘I’m sorry. I’ll make it right.'”
Redemption in Extra Time
The 26-year-old fulfilled his promise spectacularly during extra time. Osimhen netted two crucial goals that secured Nigeria’s victory. His double ensured the Super Eagles advanced to Sunday’s final against DR Congo.
Osimhen expressed deep appreciation for his teammates’ support after his initial miss. He emphasized how their encouragement helped him recover mentally during the critical moment.
“Having teammates who motivate you is essential,” Osimhen stated. “Especially when you’re usually the motivator yourself. They lifted me when I was down. Kudos to them.”
The striker now aims to maintain his scoring form against DR Congo. Nigeria continues their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
