Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has clarified why Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi won the 2025 CAF Player of the Year award. This decision saw Hakimi triumph over Nigeria’s own Victor Osimhen. The outcome generated considerable discussion across the African continent.
Ikpeba stated that Hakimi’s outstanding season with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) truly set him apart. He believes this performance put the Moroccan ahead of all other contenders for the prestigious honour.
Hakimi’s Dominant Season with PSG
The talented right-back played a crucial role in PSG’s successful campaign. He was instrumental in their UEFA Champions League victory. Hakimi also secured the Ligue 1 title with the French champions. Additionally, PSG lifted every major domestic trophy that season. Only the FIFA Club World Cup eluded their grasp.
Hakimi ultimately finished ahead of Osimhen and Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah. He secured African football’s most coveted individual prize.
Victor Osimhen also enjoyed an exceptional season. The Super Eagles striker netted 37 goals. He also provided eight assists in 41 matches for Galatasaray. His contributions helped the Turkish giants clinch a domestic double.
Ikpeba’s Insight on the Decision
Despite Osimhen’s heroics, Ikpeba emphasized Hakimi’s broader influence. He believes Hakimi’s impact within a treble-winning side proved decisive. This was the defining factor in the award race.
Ikpeba shared his thoughts. “We are disappointed we are not going to the World Cup,” he began. “But Victor [Osimhen] has been outstanding. His passion and determination for the national team know no limits.”
He continued, “Among the three players, Hakimi truly shone. He won the Ligue 1, the Champions League, and everything else with PSG. For the pure beauty of football, he is a deserving winner.”
