Francis Uzoho feels both emotional and deeply satisfied. His return to the Super Eagles marks a significant moment. Nigeria prepares for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The goalkeeper is in Eric Chelle’s final 28-man squad. Three goalkeepers made the cut. Chelle’s list includes eight defenders, eight midfielders, and nine forwards. Five new players received their first invitations.
Uzoho last played for the national team in March 2024. That was a friendly match against Ghana. He spent over a year away from the squad. The 26-year-old admitted he missed the strong team bond.

“I missed the boys,” Uzoho stated. “I missed the camp vibe. We have been together a long time. The most notable thing I missed was being around them. We faced many challenges together. We always check on each other. I am closer to some colleagues, but I reach out to everyone.”
The former Golden Eaglets star felt relief and happiness. Receiving the invitation was a joyful moment. He added that representing Nigeria is his highest honour.
“I was filled with joy,” he said. “I cannot truly express it. It was a relief. I am coming back to be with the boys. We will have that same feeling again. Representing Nigeria is most important.” He added, “Anyone called up is ready. If you are not ready, you won’t be called up.”
“The technical crew and scouts know their job,” Uzoho believes. “They invite players they trust. They know players are ready to represent the country. So, I am ready. If the country needs me, I will be prepared.”
Team Harmony and AFCON Ambitions
Uzoho also dismissed tension among goalkeepers. He insisted on trust and mutual support. His relationship with Stanley Nwabali is strong. Nwabali is currently the first-choice goalkeeper.
“I am close to everyone,” he confirmed. “Stanley is my brother. When he joined, we were together. We helped each other. I helped him, and he helped me. He is a good guy. I have a very close relationship with him. People outside might not see it, but we are good.”
Nigeria will compete in Group C. Their opponents are Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda. The Super Eagles start against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars on December 23. They face Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles on December 27. Their final group match is against Uganda’s Cranes on December 30.
Nigeria finished runners-up in the last AFCON. They lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast. The team heads to Morocco with determination. They aim for a fourth continental title. Nigeria won in 1980, 1994, and 2013.
