Former Minister of Special Duties Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) has officially submitted his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national chairmanship position. This move comes ahead of the party’s elective National Convention scheduled for November 15-16, 2025 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Turaki’s submission follows reports of his endorsement as consensus candidate by PDP governors and National Working Committee members. Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa) reportedly spearheaded the consensus arrangement. Makinde is also supporting his ally Taofeek Arapaja for National Secretary.
Internal Opposition Emerges
The consensus decision has triggered significant opposition within party ranks. Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike criticized the process, accusing Governor Fintiri of announcing the candidate without proper consultation. Wike’s objections highlight deepening divisions ahead of the crucial convention.
Lamido’s Failed Bid and Legal Threat
Former Foreign Affairs Minister Sule Lamido, who previously declared his chairmanship ambition on social media, failed to obtain nomination forms on Monday. Lamido informed journalists of his determination to contest and threatened legal action if blocked from participating. “I am prepared to contest at the convention,” Lamido stated, vowing to challenge any exclusion in court.
Mounting Crisis Before Convention
This leadership tussle represents a growing crisis for Nigeria’s main opposition party. With the convention approaching and general elections looming in 2027, the PDP faces internal challenges that could impact its unity and electoral prospects. Party officials postponed screening of convention aspirants amid the escalating tensions.
