Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reacted to Nigeria’s heartbreaking World Cup qualifying exit, revealing he would have stepped up for a penalty during the shootout against DR Congo if he had been playing. Nigeria lost 4-3 on penalties last Sunday, ending their hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Troost-Ekong, Nigeria’s most experienced penalty taker, watched the entire match from the bench. His absence during the decisive shootout sparked debate among supporters. Many fans believed key players could have scored if they remained on the pitch.
When asked about not being substituted in during extra time, the 32-year-old defender responded clearly. “No, I wasn’t frustrated. I simply wanted victory however possible,” Troost-Ekong stated. He emphasized his commitment extends beyond playing time.
“My role involves supporting the team both on and off the field,” he explained. “Our squad shows strong unity in all situations.” The captain acknowledged he naturally would have taken a penalty if available.
However, Troost-Ekong highlighted the value for younger teammates. “This experience will help their development and Nigerian football’s future,” he noted. Four of his eight international goals have come from penalties, explaining fan expectations for his involvement.
