President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently held a crucial meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders and governorship aspirants from Osun State. The high-level engagement took place at the State House, Abuja, on Monday night.
During the meeting, President Tinubu strongly appealed for unity and consensus-building. This plea comes ahead of the party’s primary election, scheduled for December 13, 2025.
Key Attendees at the Abuja Meeting
Several Osun State governorship aspirants attended the meeting with the President. They included former Deputy Governor Benedict Olugboyega Alabi, Dotun Babayemi, and Akin Ogunbiyi. Senator Babajide Omoworare, Kunle Adegoke (SAN), and Babatunde Hareter Oralusi were also present. Other aspirants included Mulikat Abiola Jimoh and Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji.
Prominent national APC figures also graced the event. These included Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, the APC National Chairman, and Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Governor Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors, and Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, were also in attendance.
President Tinubu’s Call for Unity and Party Supremacy
President Tinubu praised all the aspirants for their significant contributions to the APC in Osun State. He urged them to set aside differences and support the party’s eventual consensus candidate. This candidate will represent the party in the upcoming governorship election.
The President also advised against internal squabbles and disunity. He reminded them that such divisions caused the party to lose the last state election. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) capitalized on the APC’s internal issues then.
Emphasizing the importance of party supremacy, President Tinubu charged the aspirants to let this principle guide the selection of the flagbearer. He stressed that only a united party can truly benefit from electoral victories.
“You all have a duty and obligation to the party,” President Tinubu affirmed. “You must ensure our candidate wins the next election in Osun State. Strengthen your bonds of unity, uphold party supremacy, and embrace collective responsibility.”
He expressed absolute confidence in their ability to deliver victory for the party. “You have my support and that of the APC National leadership to win the coming election,” the President assured them.
Aspirants and Leaders Sign Joint Statement
At the conclusion of the meeting, a joint statement was issued. All aspirants and APC leaders signed this declaration. It solidified their commitment to support the candidate who emerges from the primary process.
The statement, signed by all participants, outlined key commitments:
- We affirm and uphold the supremacy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in guiding and determining the most appropriate process for selecting the party’s flag bearer for the 2025 Governorship Election in Osun State.
- We unanimously agree to abide by the party’s decision to nominate a consensus candidate for affirmation at the APC Primary Election scheduled for Saturday, December 13, 2025.
- We accept the outcome of the party-led nomination process in good faith, and pledge our total support to the candidate so nominated and affirmed.
- We commit ourselves to peace, unity, and cohesion within the APC. We pledge not to engage in any act, public or private, that may undermine the integrity of the process or the standing of the party.
- We will work collectively and individually to ensure the success of the APC at the polls. This includes the consolidation of good governance in Osun State.
The declaration concluded by stating its voluntary nature. It also highlighted their absolute loyalty to the party. Furthermore, it acknowledged the vital guidance provided by Mr. President and the National Chairman. This guidance is seen as crucial for the progress and stability of Osun State.
