In a significant political development for Taraba State, former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Senator Joel Danlami Ikenya, has announced his return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
This move comes amidst widespread defections of politicians in the state to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Notably, it contrasts with the impending move of Governor Agbu Kefas to the APC.
Senator Ikenya, a respected grassroots politician, revealed his decision in a letter. The letter was made available to journalists in Jalingo. He stated that his choice followed “careful consideration, due diligence, and wide consultations.”
A Significant Loss for APC in Southern Taraba
Ikenya’s defection is seen as a substantial loss for the APC, particularly in Southern Taraba State. He holds considerable influence in this region. His departure directly challenges the political momentum created by Governor Kefas’s expected move to the APC, which has heightened political tensions across the state.
In his letter, titled ‘Defection Notification by Sen. Joel Danlami Ikenya,’ the former minister clearly articulated his reasons. “I am pleased to announce that I have formally defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” he wrote. He added, “This decision is in the interest of my people, Tarabans.”
He further emphasized the PDP’s crucial role in his political journey. He expressed his reluctance to abandon the party during its time of need. “You are all aware that the PDP remains the party that has given me the platform to attain all the positions I have ever held in politics,” Ikenya stated. He concluded, “This is where I believe I am loved.”
Ikenya’s Extensive Political Career with PDP
Senator Ikenya’s political career has largely unfolded under the PDP banner. His past roles include:
- Taraba State House of Assembly: 1999–2003
- House of Representatives: 2003–2007
- Senate (Taraba South): 2007–2015
- Minister of Labour and Productivity: March–May 2015 (under President Goodluck Jonathan)
He reassured his loyal supporters that his decision was guided solely by his commitment. His primary aim remains to effectively serve his constituents.
