Strong indications emerged on Monday suggesting Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas may soon defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This potential move threatens to end PDP’s 26-year political dominance in the state.
Multiple party insiders confirmed that discussions between Governor Kefas’ camp and APC leadership in Abuja have reached advanced stages. A senior gubernatorial aide revealed: “Consultations are actively ongoing. The governor is strategically evaluating the timing.”
An APC source in Jalingo described the potential defection as “a long-overdue homecoming.” They emphasized that Kefas’ governance record and grassroots appeal would significantly strengthen APC’s framework ahead of the 2027 elections. “His leadership would fortify our party structure,” the insider stated.
Within PDP ranks, tension escalates as stakeholders view the rumored defection as a mandate betrayal. A senior PDP chieftain admitted: “PDP would collapse in Taraba without Kefas. He’s the sole pillar maintaining our party structure.”
Though Governor Kefas hasn’t issued any official statement, his increased visits to APC-controlled states and heightened engagements with federal officials have intensified speculation about an imminent party switch.
