Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas is set to officially join the All Progressives Congress (APC) this Wednesday. His move brings an end to months of intense speculation. These rumours concerned his planned defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
APC officials confirmed this development on Saturday. They stated that all arrangements for the high-profile switch have been finalized. The National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC will formally welcome Governor Kefas.
APC Leadership Confirms Reception
Ajibola Basiru, the National Secretary of the APC, spoke with Sunday Punch. He disclosed that the party’s leadership is fully mobilized for Governor Kefas’s entry. Basiru affirmed: “The entire National Working Committee members of the APC will receive Governor Kefas on November 19.” He added, “We are prepared for the event.”
Governor Kefas is one of the few remaining PDP governors. He has been the subject of defection rumours for nearly five months. His decision makes him the fourth PDP governor to join the ruling APC this year.
Other governors who earlier defected include Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State. Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom and Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa also joined. These defections further highlight a growing trend.
Implications for the 2027 Elections
Kefas’s defection significantly reduces the number of opposition governors. It signals another major shift in Nigeria’s political power dynamics. This move is particularly noteworthy. The nation is gearing up for the 2027 general elections.
An official invitation card circulated on social media on Saturday. It confirmed the details of the defection ceremony. The event is scheduled for 1 PM on Wednesday. It will take place at the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo. Jalingo is the capital of Taraba State.
