Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas met with President Bola Tinubu. The meeting took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
This Monday engagement was Governor Kefas’s first official interaction with the presidency. It comes amidst his widely reported plan to switch political parties. He intends to move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A grand reception for his APC entry was scheduled for November 19. However, Governor Kefas postponed the event. He cited sensitivity as the reason. It would have been inappropriate to celebrate. This was while Kebbi State residents faced the abduction of schoolgirls in Maga.
Before the Governor’s anticipated party switch, other defections occurred. The Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, along with 15 lawmakers, left the PDP. They also joined the APC.
The legislators explained their decision. They stressed the need to align with the central government. They also attributed their move to the PDP’s national crisis. This crisis, they stated, had weakened the opposition party’s internal structure.
Governor Kefas is a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the Nigerian Army. He previously chaired the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). He secured victory in the March 2023 governorship election. This was under the PDP platform.
He originates from Wukari. Before becoming the PDP’s 2023 standard-bearer, he served as the Taraba PDP chairman.
