Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has publicly defended his impending move to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He asserts this decision is solely to advance the interests of Taraba people. Kefas made these remarks at a significant cultural celebration. The event attracted several prominent guests. These included three governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and many other dignitaries.
Governor Kefas had earlier postponed his formal defection to the APC. This followed the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State. The initial reception was planned for November 19, 2025.
Governor Kefas Explains His Stance
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Kefas insisted his switch to the APC stems from patriotism. He denied it was motivated by political rivalry. “This is an event where all Margi nations come together,” he stated. “We look at where we are from, where we are, and where we are going.”
He clarified, “This is not a political gathering. Governor Fintiri is a true Margi son. He is a unifying factor. I have enjoyed our neighbourhood and brotherhood.” Kefas acknowledged disagreements. “The only reason we have disagreements,” he added, “is my decision to move to the All Progressives Congress.” He expressed confidence. “At the end of the day, he will reason with me,” Kefas said. “My decision serves the interest of my people. I wish you all the best.”
Makinde Warns Against One-Party System
In his address, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde criticised political forces. He accused them of attempting to steer the country towards a one-party system. “From the history being read,” Makinde remarked, “Nigeria comprises several nations. For those trying to push us towards a one-party state, this is why it will not happen.”
Governor Makinde also praised the Margi people. He commended them for honouring Governor Ahmadu Fintiri. He described the event as a rare display of unity. “For the Margi nation, people think it is very easy to give honour to one of your own,” he stated. “But prophets are not always appreciated in their own home. This is a unique event today.”
Makinde further lauded Fintiri’s distinguished rise in public service. “I congratulate my brother, Governor Fintiri,” he began. “I was reading his trajectory in the programme book. He got elected into the House of Assembly as Minority Leader. Later, he became Majority Leader. He also served as Deputy Speaker, then Speaker. Today, he is the governor.” Makinde concluded, “So, we know what he is made of. If he is given a chance, he will go a mile.”
PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman Speaks
The Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, also spoke. He commended the Margi nation. He conveyed goodwill from other PDP governors. “We are happy to be with Governor Umaru Fintiri,” he announced. “We are here on behalf of everyone in the PDP, especially our governors not present.” Mohammed added, “We identify with the day. We will lend our support to the development of culture and unity.”
Governor Mohammed stressed the importance of history in nation-building. “History is not about the past alone,” he clarified. “We know the past to understand the present. This helps us conquer our challenges.”
He then announced a generous donation. The PDP Governors’ Forum pledged ₦50 million. This support is for cultural development in the state.
