Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has cautioned his squad against complacency as they prepare to face Benin Republic. The teams meet in Friday’s first leg of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Lome’s Stade de Kegue.
Despite being defending champions and match favorites, Madugu emphasized that underestimating their opponents would be unwise. “We can’t underrate anybody on the field,” the coach stated. “Benin Republic earned their place by defeating other teams. They deserve full respect.”
Madugu dismissed any notion of viewing Benin as inferior opponents. “We’re not considering them a lesser team simply because they’re not South Africa or Morocco. They’re reputable opponents who merit serious attention.”
The Nigerian squad arrived in Lome earlier this week. Their objective is securing a convincing first-leg advantage. The return fixture follows next Tuesday at Abeokuta’s Moshood Abiola Sports Arena.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie expressed confidence ahead of the qualifying clash. “Team spirit remains extremely high,” the Brighton shot-stopper confirmed. “Since learning we’d face Benin Republic, we’ve constantly discussed winning strategies. We’re fully prepared mentally and physically.”
The match kicks off at 4 p.m. Nigerian time. Victory would position the Super Falcons favorably in their continental title defense campaign.
