Osimhen Hails Troost-Ekong’s Mentorship
Victor Osimhen expressed his profound appreciation for Troost-Ekong on social media platform X. He praised the former captain as a mentor whose guidance shaped him both on and off the pitch.
Osimhen wrote, “It’s been an honour sharing the pitch with you, Skippo. Your guidance, humility, and professionalism inspired us all to strive for excellence. Thank you for everything you’ve given to the team and Nigeria. Wishing you greatness ahead. You’ve earned it. Legend forever.”
Iwobi Reflects on Captain’s Influence
Alex Iwobi echoed similar sentiments in an interview with SportyTV. He described the atmosphere in the Super Eagles camp as emotional following the announcement.
“Obviously, it is a sad one for us because he is a big part of our team,” the Fulham midfielder stated. “But at the end of the day, I wish him well. He is a brother who has helped Nigeria and me.”
Iwobi further highlighted Troost-Ekong’s impact, noting that his influence extended far beyond his playing minutes in recent months.
“Towards the end of his Nigerian career, he wasn’t playing as much as he would like,” Iwobi explained. “But he remained a huge part of our team. His voice and leadership were crucial. He ensured the team’s togetherness stayed strong.”
A Look Back at Troost-Ekong’s Illustrious Career
Born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mother and a Nigerian father, Troost-Ekong initially represented the Netherlands at youth level. He later made the pivotal decision to switch allegiance, opting to play for Nigeria.
His senior debut for the Super Eagles came on June 13, 2015, in an AFCON qualifier against Chad. Throughout his career, Troost-Ekong set a remarkable record, scoring five goals at the Africa Cup of Nations, the highest tally ever achieved by a defender in the competition.
His final appearance for Nigeria was as a late substitute against Gabon on November 13, 2025. Currently, Troost-Ekong plays his club football for Al-Kholood in the Saudi Pro League.
