Villagers in Bakale, Sokoto State, face a severe threat. An armed group demands a N20 million levy. This payment, they claim, will prevent further attacks. Bakale is in Kilgori district, Yabo Local Government Area.
Armed Group Leader Delivers Ultimatum
An audio recording revealed the gang leader’s instructions. He told the village head to inform residents. The group issued a new demand. “Did you speak with them? Did they accept our terms?” he questioned.
The traditional ruler confirmed his discussion with villagers. The bandit then demanded another meeting. He insisted on the N20 million payment. This was to avert further violence.
Comply or Face Consequences, Bandits Warn
The group’s leader stated the levy ensured peace. It served as a protection fee for residents. “We wish to avoid attacking you,” he declared. “This levy is our solution. Pay it, and peace will follow.”
“No other group will harm your community. We will protect your people. Fail to pay, and we will attack. We will kill and abduct. This is our clear message.”
Affected Regions and Villages
An anonymous community leader confirmed this trend. Many nearby settlements received similar demands. This has occurred in recent months. Communities in Kilgori and Torankawa districts are affected.
These include Bazar, Alkalije, Gari, Bakale, Dagel, Adarawa, and Kwaidaza. Also, Kilgori Runji, Tudu, Tile, Kibiyare, Barmadu, and other areas.
Varying Ransom Demands
The source indicated varied billing for each village. Amounts depend on size and population. Armed groups demand levies between N3 million and N20 million. This highlights the widespread nature of the threat.
