Bakale village residents face a grave demand. This community is in Sokoto State, Yabo Local Government Area. An armed group ordered them to pay a N20 million levy. This payment aims to avert further attacks.
Armed Group Commander Issues New Ultimatum
A gang leader issued a stern new demand. An audio recording captured this message. He instructed the village head to gather residents. The purpose was to relay the group’s directive.
“Did you meet with them?” he questioned. “Did they consent to my order?” the leader inquired.
The traditional ruler confirmed his discussion with villagers. Subsequently, the bandit mandated another gathering. He insisted the community pay N20 million. This payment is to avert violence.
Impending Threats for Non-Compliance
The armed group’s leader stated the levy ensured peace for residents.
“We intend no attack,” the leader declared. “This levy serves as a peace offering.” He guaranteed tranquility upon payment. “No rival group will menace or abduct your people,” he promised. However, non-payment holds severe risks. “We will attack, kill, and abduct you,” he warned. “This is our final word.”
Non-compliance, he emphasized, ensures dire consequences. These include assaults, fatalities, and abductions.
Multiple Districts Face Similar Extortion
An anonymous community leader confirmed this pattern. Several nearby settlements received similar demands. This trend emerged in recent months.
Many communities are now impacted. They span both Kilgori and Torankawa districts. These include Bazar, Alkalije, Gari, and Bakale. Dagel, Adarawa, and Kwaidaza are also affected. Kilgori Runji, Tudu, Tile, Kibiyare, and Barmadu face threats. Other settlements endure similar pressure.
Extortion Demands Vary Widely
The source revealed varying village levies. Each amount depends on the community’s size. Population also plays a role in the billing.
The armed groups’ demands vary greatly. Levies range from N3 million to N20 million.
