Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a prominent Islamic cleric, has expressed his readiness to advocate for Nnamdi Kanu’s pardon. The IPOB leader would receive amnesty if he demonstrates genuine remorse. He must also commit sincerely to peace initiatives.
Gumi shared this perspective when addressing questions about his controversial stance. He often engages non-state actors. He also advocates for negotiation with armed groups.

The Rationale Behind Gumi’s Call for Dialogue
Asked about his perceived support for violent actors, Gumi clarified his position. “I do not support their actions,” he stated. “My advocacy is for Nigeria’s well-being. We must address this menace effectively.”
He highlighted Nigeria’s escalating insecurity. Children suffer kidnappings in Kebbi. Fear permeates Kwara and Bauchi. Numerous outlaws pose a significant threat to national stability.
He argues that military force alone is insufficient.
“Armies trained for conventional warfare struggle against guerrilla tactics,” he noted. “Even powerful nations like America, Afghanistan, and Israel faced challenges. No standard army can easily defeat guerrilla campaigns.”
Past Leaders and Precedents for Reconciliation
Gumi urged Nigeria to adopt non-military solutions. This applies when opportunities for peace emerge. “If individuals are willing to disarm,” he questioned, “why insist solely on kinetic action?”
He drew parallels with Nigeria’s past reconciliation efforts. Shehu Shagari granted amnesty to Ojukwu. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua also sought peaceful resolutions.
Regarding Nnamdi Kanu, Gumi stated his position. “Kanu is imprisoned for terrorism,” he observed. “He incited violence against our soldiers. However, if Kanu expresses remorse and advocates for peace, I will actively support his pardon. I would also advocate for his amnesty.”
