Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has raised serious concerns about President Bola Tinubu’s governing approach. The Abia South lawmaker characterized the administration as operating like a “Kabiyesi” system during a recent appearance on Channels Television.
‘Kabiyesi’ Governance Concerns
Abaribe lamented the administration’s resistance to constructive criticism. He stated that Tinubu is increasingly perceived as infallible. Any presidential statement receives automatic endorsement without scrutiny.
“The government has turned into a Kabiyesi administration,” Abaribe declared. “The president supposedly can do no wrong. Everything he says receives unquestioned agreement.”
Democratic Alternatives
The senator contrasted Tinubu’s leadership with Peter Obi’s governance credentials. He suggested several qualified Nigerians could effectively lead the country. Abaribe explicitly endorsed Obi as his preferred candidate.
“Many capable democrats can govern Nigeria effectively,” Abaribe asserted. “Peter Obi would be my choice. Challenging governmental views is essential. Currently, such dissent risks being labeled treasonous.”
Family Involvement Criticized
Abaribe condemned the perceived prominence of Tinubu’s family in state affairs. He emphasized Nigeria’s democratic framework differs fundamentally from monarchical systems.
“Throughout Peter Obi’s governorship, did we hear about his children or wife?” Abaribe questioned. “Nigeria isn’t a monarchy. Families shouldn’t dominate public offices or exploit state resources.”
Rejecting the ‘Mandate’ Narrative
The senator also distanced himself from pro-Tinubu demonstrations. He specifically referenced the administration’s “on your mandate” anthem.
“I don’t believe mandate supporters truly enjoy their stance,” Abaribe stated. “I’ve never sung that song. When played during assemblies, I remain seated while others participate.”
