Former Senate President Bukola Saraki met with ex-Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido at his Abuja residence on Thursday. This high-profile gathering intensified speculation about deepening divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before its national convention.
The meeting between these influential party figures fueled rumors of a possible convention boycott. The PDP’s planned gathering in Ibadan on November 15-16 faces legal hurdles after a Federal High Court intervention.
Justice Peter Lifu issued an interim order halting the convention. This decision came in response to Lamido’s lawsuit against the party. The restraining order remains effective until the case’s resolution.
Lamido initiated legal action after being excluded from the chairmanship contest. He claims the PDP denied him nomination forms despite proper procurement. The former governor alleges rule violations under party regulations and electoral laws.
Saraki previously declared opposition to the convention plans. He cited contradictory court orders that create uncertainty about the event’s legitimacy. The former Senate president withdrew support and proposed alternative measures.
Saraki urged PDP leadership to establish a caretaker committee. This temporary body would manage party affairs until resolving all pending disputes. The suggestion aims to stabilize the party during this contentious period.
