Popular Nigerian skitmaker Emmanuel Ejekwu, known as Sabinus, recently shared a personal revelation. He disclosed that his father was initially upset about his decision to pursue comedy.
Sabinus discovered his talent for comedy during his time at the University of Port Harcourt. There, he began creating skits.
Upon learning about Sabinus’s chosen path, his father expressed deep regret. He felt his investment in Sabinus’s education was wasted. His father even called skit making a “stupid business.”
However, the situation changed. Sabinus’s father eventually gave his blessing to the career. This happened after Sabinus started sending him money from his comedy earnings.
Recounting his father’s initial aspirations, Sabinus stated, “My dad never wanted me to be what I am today.” He explained his father’s desire for him to become a lawyer. Sabinus attempted to gain admission to study law. Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful. “So, I had to settle for Linguistics and Communication Studies at Uniport,” he added.
He further elaborated on his journey. “It was on the campus that I saw skit making and I decided to try it out,” Sabinus said. He admitted, “Money wasn’t coming” in the early days.
Sabinus initially kept his comedy career a secret from his father after graduation. “My dad never knew I was a comedian because I was hiding it,” he revealed. About a year post-graduation, his father started noticing him on comedy show posters. Sabinus’s sisters then confirmed his involvement in comedy. This news infuriated his father. Sabinus recalled his father’s strong reaction: “‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.'”
