Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has rejected recent reports about his potential vice presidential bid in the 2027 elections.
This clarification follows discussions sparked by Dele Momodu, publisher of Ovation magazine. Momodu had suggested a possible political pairing. He implied that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar might consider Amaechi as his running mate. This would happen if erstwhile presidential candidate Peter Obi declines such an offer.
Amaechi’s Firm Stance on the Presidency
However, Amaechi’s media aide, David Iyofor, spoke to The Punch. He clarified the former Rivers governor’s definitive stance. Amaechi’s sole ambition is to become the President of Nigeria. Iyofor stressed that his principal would not be a running mate to anyone. Amaechi has thus distanced himself from any such political alliances.
Iyofor emphasized Amaechi’s clear position. “Amaechi is not seeking to be running mate to anybody,” he stated unequivocally. “He does not intend to be a presidential running mate to anybody and will not.”
Furthermore, Iyofor conveyed Amaechi’s conviction. He believes it is the turn of Southern Nigeria to produce the next president. Consequently, Amaechi is actively pursuing the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Iyofor reiterated this firmly. “Amaechi is not aware of, and will not be part of any talk to be running mate to anybody,” he asserted. He added, “For emphasis, Amaechi is running to be President of Nigeria, not to be a running mate.”
He concluded with a stern warning. “Politicians are kindly advised to leave Amaechi’s name out of any discussion for presidential running mate,” Iyofor stated.
Amaechi’s Political Path to 2027
Amaechi previously sought the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket in 2023. Earlier this year, he made a significant move by defecting to the ADC. He has since formally declared his intention to seek the ADC’s nomination for the 2027 presidential election.
