Port Harcourt, Rivers State – Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, officially declared his defection on Friday. He moved from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Amaewhule cited internal divisions within the PDP as his primary reason for leaving.
Addressing his fellow lawmakers, Amaewhule made the announcement. “Distinguished colleagues,” he stated, “I have happily decided to leave the PDP.” He confirmed writing to his ward chairman about this decision. “The APC is now my new party,” Amaewhule firmly declared.
Aligning with the Centre
The Speaker also mentioned steps are underway to secure his APC membership card. “I will do all that is needed,” he affirmed. This ensures his APC party card is issued swiftly. “As we speak today,” he added, “I am a member of the APC. We can then join forces with Mr. President.”
Amaewhule specifically lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He praised the President’s efforts to enhance national security. He also acknowledged Tinubu’s dedication to empowering Rivers State within the federal framework. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is doing so much for this country,” he noted. “He means well for Nigeria.”
The Speaker reiterated Tinubu’s commitment. “He is tackling the issue of security headlong,” Amaewhule said. “The president has shown love to Rivers State.” He explained his defection aligns with national interests. This move aims to benefit the people of Rivers State through stronger ties with the federal government.
PDP’s Internal Crisis Blamed
Amaewhule clarified that the long-standing crisis within the PDP was a major factor. This internal conflict pushed him and his colleagues out of the party. “The major reason for leaving the PDP,” he stated emphatically, “is because of the division in PDP.”
