President Bola Tinubu will present the 2026 Appropriation Bill to Nigeria’s National Assembly during Friday’s joint session. The formal notification letter was read on the House floor by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen on Thursday.
Scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, this presentation marks Tinubu’s constitutional duty as President and Commander-in-Chief. The annual budget submission initiates legislative review of the Federal Government’s fiscal proposals.
Rivers State Assembly Adjourns Amid Budget Controversy
Simultaneously, Rivers State House of Assembly adjourned indefinitely. This escalates political tensions regarding Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s presentation of the 2025 budget. The adjournment followed Governor Fubara’s formal request to address lawmakers.
In a March 13, 2025 letter to Speaker Martin Amaewhule, Fubara sought to present the budget on March 19 or another convenient date. He cited compliance with a Supreme Court judgment that mandates constitutional governance procedures.
The governor referenced a previous presentation attempt on March 12 that failed when he was denied Assembly access. “Despite submitting a soft budget copy to the Speaker, we lacked the Supreme Court’s certified judgment,” Fubara stated in the letter.
Fubara emphasized the Supreme Court’s directive for constitutional governance. He urged prioritizing state interests over political conflicts. “Our people’s welfare must transcend personal differences,” the governor asserted in his appeal.
