President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently attended the 15th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The significant gathering took place at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. President Tinubu’s arrival at 6:05 pm on Friday marked the official start of proceedings.
This particular meeting holds importance for the ruling party. It is the APC’s second NEC assembly for 2025. An earlier session took place in February. This is also the first NEC meeting since Professor Nentawe Yilwatda assumed his role. He became National Chairman in July.
The meeting commenced with a Christian prayer. Taraba State Governor, Kefas Agbu, led the opening devotion. This NEC session occurred after the party rescheduled its National Caucus and NEC meetings. They were moved from December 15–16 to December 18–19. The Presidential Villa served as the venue.
Key Leaders in Attendance
The event saw a strong turnout of party leaders. According to reports, many governors and top party chieftains were present. Attendees included serving APC governors and former governors. Principal officers of the National Assembly were also in attendance.
A notable aspect of the meeting was the presence of six governors. These governors were elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). They recently defected to the APC. This group included Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori were also present. Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, and Taraba State Governor Kefas Agbu also attended.
The Role of the APC NEC
The APC National Executive Committee is a vital organ. It serves as the party’s highest decision-making body between conventions. Its membership includes key figures. These are the President, Vice President, and the National Chairman. Members of the National Working Committee and governors are also part of it. The NEC is responsible for crucial party matters. It makes binding decisions on administration and policy direction. It also handles preparations for future elections.
