Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has confirmed his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), revealing that President Bola Tinubu personally extended the invitation multiple times. Despite initially declining for political convictions, Mutfwang stated he maintained cordial relations with the President throughout.
Tinubu’s Persistent Overtures
Governor Mutfwang disclosed the details during a meeting with political appointees in Jos. “I respect President Tinubu for honoring our initial decision to remain in PDP,” he stated. The Governor acknowledged that besides the President, several APC governors and influential figures had urged him to switch parties.
PDP Structural Crisis Forces Decision
Mutfwang explained his reversal stemmed from unresolved national-level issues within the PDP. “We have zero challenges at the state level,” he noted, “but our efforts are futile without a solid national structure.” The Governor emphasized the high risks of remaining with the PDP amid its ongoing crisis.
“Staying in PDP gambles carelessly with Plateau’s mandate,” Mutfwang asserted. He added that unpredictable outcomes and potential losses made continuity untenable. The Governor stressed that Plateau citizens couldn’t endure further political uncertainty after recent “emotional torture.”
APC Alignment Benefits Plateau
Mutfwang clarified his decision wasn’t personally motivated. He cited Tinubu’s respectful engagement with Plateau State and the administration’s cordiality. “Joining APC unlocks federal opportunities,” he declared, listing appointments and developmental favors as key benefits.
“Why forfeit these advantages? Wisdom dictates we seize them,” Mutfwang concluded, affirming his commitment to making Plateau votes translate into tangible progress under the APC umbrella.
