Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has acknowledged facing pressure to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, he firmly rejected the possibility, stating that only divine authority and voters’ will could influence such a political decision.
Speaking at a Government House event in Jos, Mutfwang addressed the audience directly. He asked if they wanted him to switch parties, receiving a unanimous “No” in response. The governor emphasized that only two entities could authorize such a move: divine power and the people.
These comments follow recent actions by APC stakeholders in Plateau State. They dismissed speculation about Mutfwang potentially joining their party. During a meeting in Jos, leaders rejected a motion proposing his defection.
Former APC deputy national secretary Festus Fuanter had moved the motion. It was defeated through a voice vote. Fuanter stated the APC would focus on its own strategies ahead of the 2027 elections.
Mutfwang described the APC’s rejection as unnecessary. He claimed most APC members in Plateau would welcome his defection. The governor maintained he has no intention of switching parties despite the pressure.
He added that the issue wasn’t his current priority. Mutfwang concluded it was “a story for another day.” His stance reinforces his commitment to remaining with the PDP.
