Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc founder Atedo Peterside has declared Nigeria’s judiciary fundamentally failed in addressing electoral reforms. The prominent businessman demanded immediate systemic changes, arguing electoral authorities must bear greater accountability.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” Peterside lamented judicial shortcomings. He advocated shifting legal burdens to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“Our judiciary hasn’t met required standards,” Peterside asserted. “It has failed woefully. I endorse amending the Electoral Act to make INEC prove result validity. We cannot tolerate INEC presenting questionable outcomes then forcing victims to disprove them. Even obvious irregularities go unchallenged.”
The Anap Foundation founder expressed grave concern over eroding public confidence. He cautioned that without institutional reform, citizens might resort to extra-legal actions during future elections.
Peterside emphasized restorative measures are urgently needed. He believes rebuilding trust in both electoral and judicial systems remains critical for Nigeria’s democratic stability.
