Yunusa Tanko, former campaign spokesman for Peter Obi, has affirmed Peter Obi’s determination to contest the 2027 presidential election. Tanko also coordinates the Obidient Movement Worldwide. He has urged the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to allow Obi more time. This time is crucial for consultations before Obi decides on his involvement with the party.
Tanko’s remarks followed statements from Bolaji Abdullahi. Abdullahi is the ADC spokesperson. He had stressed that the ADC was not prioritizing zoning. Instead, the party focuses on its message. It aims to be a credible alternative to Nigeria’s current political establishment.
ADC’s Stance on Zoning
In an interview with Sunday Punch, Abdullahi reiterated the ADC’s stance. He stated the party was not ready to adopt Obi’s position on zoning. “We are not discussing zoning now,” he said. “Nigerians still expect us to show what we will do differently. Zoning is not currently a priority.”
Abdullahi further explained, “If zoning is Obi’s condition for joining us, perhaps he should wait.” He added that the ADC’s main goal is to prove its credibility to Nigerians. This holds true regardless of any candidate’s origin. “The most important thing,” Abdullahi clarified, “is convincing Nigerians that we offer a credible alternative.”
Tanko Calls for Extensive Consultations
Responding to the ADC’s viewpoint, Tanko emphasized Obi’s need for thorough consultations. These discussions must involve his supporters and constituents. This process is essential before any final decisions are made. “Obi needs wide consultation,” Tanko stated. This includes engagement with the Obidient Movement Worldwide. They have strong belief in him and his decisions.
Tanko further clarified Obi’s efforts. Obi is consulting with stakeholders globally. This ensures he remains well-informed. It will help him make a sound decision regarding his 2027 presidential aspirations. “I appeal to them to grant him ample time,” Tanko added. “He must not make a mistake. The stakes are very high, as many people believe in him.”
Tanko urged the ADC and other political groups to be patient. He requested they allow Obi the necessary time. This will enable him to make a well-informed decision. It concerns his political future ahead of the 2027 elections. “My plea to the ADC and others is to understand his situation,” he said. “They should wait for his decision.”
Peter Obi’s 2027 Ambition Confirmed
Tanko also hinted at Obi’s strong intent to run in the 2027 presidential election. He reaffirmed that the North should wait until 2031. “The presidency has been zoned to the South,” he stated. “The North should wait until 2031.”
He expressed concern about altering the zoning arrangement. Such a move, he believes, might benefit the ruling party. “We cannot sacrifice the Nigerian people’s position,” Tanko argued. This applies to political patronage. “Otherwise, 2027 would be an easy win for the ruling party.”
Tanko confidently declared that Obi would be on the ballot in 2027. However, he could not specify the announcement date. “By God’s grace, Obi will certainly be on the ballot for 2027,” Tanko confirmed. “He has pledged to disclose his position soon. I cannot promise if it will be this year, but he will speak on it soon.”
Awaiting Official Announcement
He thanked Nigerians for their patience. Tanko acknowledged the complexity of Obi’s decision. “This is a very sensitive decision,” Tanko said. “But it is vital for the survival of democracy in our country.”
Tanko also alluded to efforts to impede Obi’s path to the presidency. “We are aware of serious attempts,” he mentioned. These attempts aim to stop and deny him the ticket.
