Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has declared that the “real season starts now” for his squad. This statement comes as his team intensifies efforts to close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Before the recent international break, City reduced the points difference to four. They achieved this with a dominant 3-0 victory over reigning champions Liverpool. Coincidentally, Arsenal dropped crucial points in a 2-2 draw at Sunderland. This result presented a golden opportunity for City to build significant momentum.
Ahead of Saturday’s crucial trip to Newcastle, Pep Guardiola spoke about recent results. He stressed the vital importance of maintaining pressure on Arsenal.
“In the past, when we battled fiercely against Liverpool, I felt we wouldn’t drop many points,” Guardiola explained. “If they gained a significant lead, it would be tough to catch them. This situation mirrors our rivalry with Liverpool last season.”
Guardiola has celebrated six Premier League titles with City. He emphasised that November is too early for any definitive outcomes. “The season essentially has two phases,” he explained. “One begins after the summer transfer window closes. The second starts once the international break concludes.”
“Now, the international break is behind us,” Guardiola continued. “We will be together until March, playing games every three or four days. This is when the real season truly kicks off.”
The City manager further stated their primary objective. They aim to stay near the top of the table. Their goal is to arrive at the season’s end with a strong chance to compete for the title. “The important thing is to be present and close,” he remarked. “Then, we must reach the season’s conclusion with an opportunity to fight for it. That remains our core target. Naturally, a victory tomorrow would mark a crucial step forward for us.”
A win at St James’ Park would place City just one point adrift of Arsenal. The Gunners are set to face London rivals Tottenham the very next day.
Injury Updates: Kovacic and Rodri Out
For the upcoming Newcastle match, Guardiola confirmed some key absences. Midfielders Mateo Kovacic and Rodri will not be available.
“Everyone else is fit, except Kova and Rodri,” Guardiola stated. “Rodri is progressing well in his recovery. It has been nearly three weeks since his last setback. He understands the need for thorough mental and physical recuperation. This will ensure he remains consistent for the rest of the season.”
