The Forum of State Chairmen for Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has pledged full support for National Chairman Umar Damagum while rejecting a rival faction led by Abdulrahman Mohammed as unconstitutional and illegitimate.
Following their meeting on Thursday, all 29 state chairmen issued a communique confirming Damagum as the only recognized leader under the PDP Constitution. They explicitly distanced themselves from the breakaway group challenging Damagum’s authority.
“The forum categorically states that PDP has only one National Chairman: His Excellency Umar Damagun,” the declaration emphasized. “We completely dissociate from the purported Abdulrahman leadership.”
The chairmen praised the collaborative efforts between Damagum’s National Working Committee, the PDP Governors’ Forum under Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed, and the Board of Trustees chaired by Senator Adolphus Wabara.
They demanded strict enforcement of party discipline nationwide. State chapters received instructions to sanction members whose actions threaten PDP unity or stability using constitutional measures.
Preparing for National Convention
With the national convention approaching, the forum urged delegates to prepare for active participation. They stressed the event must prioritize internal democracy, transparency, and fairness to elect credible representatives.
The chairmen reaffirmed commitment to Damagum’s leadership, pledging to collaborate with national officials to strengthen PDP’s position for future elections. They aim to rebuild public confidence in Nigeria’s main opposition party.
“We pledge unwavering dedication to PDP’s unity, progress, and electoral success,” their statement concluded. “Working closely with national leadership remains essential for strengthening internal democracy.”
