Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) National Convention Planning Committee, has confirmed the party will proceed with its elective convention in Ibadan this weekend. The announcement comes despite tensions within the party.
Key stakeholders finalized plans during a strategic meeting at Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja. Attendees included Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, and former Minister Tanimu Turaki.
Fintiri addressed journalists after the closed-door session. He expressed confidence in the convention’s schedule. “We’ve concluded our critical stakeholders’ meeting with significant decisions,” Fintiri stated. “Our convention in Ibadan remains sacrosanct.”
The declaration follows conflicting court orders challenging the convention’s legitimacy. Internal party disputes have created uncertainty about the event.
Constitutional Threshold Achieved
PDP National Vice Chairman (South-West) Kamorudeen Ajisafe confirmed delegate attendance meets requirements. The party secured representatives from two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states. This fulfills constitutional provisions for a valid convention.
“Delegates began arriving since Wednesday,” Ajisafe noted. “We’ve achieved two-thirds participation from states. Even without full attendance, this threshold validates our convention.”
