The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the dissolution of all its party structures. This action affects five key states: Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers.
The decision was made during the party’s national convention. It followed a motion presented in Ibadan on Saturday. Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, moved the motion.
Governor Makinde explained the necessity of this step. He stated it would validate executives. These officials were elected through congresses conducted nationwide. The congresses spanned from 2024 to 2025.
Addressing delegates at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Governor Makinde highlighted the recent congresses. He noted they produced officers at various levels. These included ward, local government, state, and zonal positions. National ex-officio members were also elected.
He affirmed that these exercises were peaceful. They largely complied with the Electoral Act 2022. Furthermore, they aligned with the PDP constitution and the party’s internal rules.
Makinde further disclosed that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC) had already endorsed the congress results. They also approved the elected officials across the country.
Despite these successful congresses, Governor Makinde announced the party’s resolution. It was to dismantle all existing structures in the five affected states.
He explicitly declared, “In the case of Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Rivers, the convention hereby dissolves all party structures. This includes structures at the ward, local government, and state levels.”
He added that the convention authorized the publication of this decision. This serves as a formal notice to the public.
The motion quickly gained support from the delegates present. Daniel Okechukwu, the party’s National Auditor and a member of the NWC, promptly seconded it.
