Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has urged Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in his state to prepare for alliances with other opposition parties. This comes if national leadership fails to resolve the party’s deepening crisis.
Lamido pledged to lead Jigawa PDP into alliances against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections. He made this commitment during a Monday meeting with PDP leaders from all 27 local government areas.
PDP’s National Paralysis
The former governor revealed the PDP national secretariat remains under police lockdown. Rival factions continue battling for control of the National Working Committee.
Lamido assured attendees that Jigawa’s PDP leadership remains functional despite national disarray. He confirmed prior consultations with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Reconciliation Efforts
Lamido stated the party’s fate rests with Governors Bala Muhammed, Seyi Makinde, Ahmadu Fintiri, and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Saraki’s reconciliation committee has engaged these leaders seeking internal peace.
The PDP founding member warned that failed reconciliation would necessitate alliances. He clarified these would not be coalitions but strategic partnerships.
Alliance Strategy
“If reconciliation fails, alliances become inevitable,” Lamido told supporters. “We’ll form alliances with any opposition parties.” He emphasized this differs from a merger.
Lamido stated reconciliation outcomes will be communicated to grassroots leaders by Wednesday. This will provide direction for Jigawa PDP’s next steps.
He criticized PDP governors and lawmakers for prioritizing personal interests over party unity. This neglect contributed to high-profile defections to the APC.
The power struggle over the National Chairman position has deepened since the 2023 elections. Lamido dismissed speculation about his defection despite current legal challenges.
