As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prepares for its November national convention in Ibadan, top members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) have outlined crucial expectations for the incoming national chairman. Party leaders emphasize the need for inclusive leadership, internal reconciliation, and renewed unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Core Expectations for New Leadership
Former National Secretary Ibrahim Tsauri and Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor expressed confidence that the new National Working Committee (NWC) will rejuvenate Nigeria’s main opposition party. Tsauri described the upcoming convention as the beginning of “a new era of collective and credible leadership.”
“We advocate leadership with integrity, capacity, and genuine commitment to PDP ideals,” Tsauri stated. “We expect the next chairman and NWC to rebuild, reposition, and restore our credibility before future elections.”
Chairmanship Zoning and Emerging Contenders
Northern PDP leaders recently zoned the chairmanship position to the North-West region. Northern governors endorsed former Minister Tanimu Turaki as consensus candidate. However, this decision faces opposition from factions supporting former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido.
Simultaneously, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike reportedly backs former Benue Governor Samuel Ortom for the position. This development could test the party’s fragile internal balance.
Restoring Party Discipline and Unity
Tsauri stressed that incoming leadership must prioritize party discipline and constitutional adherence. “Discipline must be fully enshrined under the new chairman,” he emphasized. “We need party supremacy and a level playing field for all members.”
He added that such an approach would rebuild trust and attract former members back to the PDP. Tsauri reaffirmed faith in the party’s nationwide presence, calling it “Nigeria’s only truly national political party.”
Calls for Inclusive Dialogue
Deputy National Youth Leader Osadolor advised the next chairman to embrace inclusive dialogue. “The next leader must listen, learn, and engage all party factions,” he said. “True understanding comes from hearing everyone’s perspective.”
Osadolor cautioned against personal ambitions, stating: “The chairmanship shouldn’t serve personal missions. It’s about repositioning for victory, uniting members, and providing equal opportunities without undermining anyone.”
He concluded that future leaders must prioritize harmonization, reconciliation, and sacrifice for the party’s progress.
