Tensions flared at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Monday as supporters of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike attempted to seize control of the party secretariat. This move followed the suspension of Wike-aligned officials by the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Acting Chairman Umar Damagum.
Leadership Clash Escalates
Before proceeding to Wadata Plaza, factional leader Abdulrahman addressed journalists at the PDP’s FCT office. He described his emergence as “a divine call” to rescue the embattled opposition party. Abdulrahman lamented PDP’s decline from 16 years of governance to a weakened opposition force.
“Our party’s current state results from leaders’ actions and inactions,” Abdulrahman stated. “We’ve witnessed inexplicable defections of governors, legislators, and council chairmen that weakened our position.” He vowed to reunite the PDP through internal reforms and disciplinary measures.
Secretariat Standoff
Abdulrahman entered the national secretariat accompanied by chanting supporters shortly after his address. Simultaneously, Damagum loyalists gathered at the premises, creating a tense confrontation. Security was immediately heightened as armed police units deployed to prevent violence between the factions.
At least 10 police patrol vans were strategically positioned around the complex. Abdulrahman emphasized his immediate priority: “Healing the party’s wounds, ending factionalization, and restoring lawful operations. My task is to reposition the PDP for relevance.”
The leadership crisis deepens amid ongoing defections and power struggles within Nigeria’s main opposition party. Observers warn the confrontation could further fracture the PDP ahead of crucial elections.
