The Northern Elders Unity Forum of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has leveled serious allegations against Defence Minister Mohammed Bello Matawalle. They accuse him of orchestrating defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Defection Accusations Emerge
Following a strategic meeting of PDP elders across four Zamfara local governments, National Secretary Abbas Sadauki issued a statement. The forum claims Matawalle uses state influence and financial resources to pressure PDP supporters.
Elected officials and party executives are reportedly being targeted. The elders view this as a deliberate move to weaken opposition strength. They believe it destabilizes democratic balance before the 2027 elections.
Democratic Concerns Raised
Sadauki stated, “Matawalle has embarked on a mission to dismantle PDP in Zamfara.” He emphasized the minister’s history of inducing defections through power and appointments. This approach allegedly creates leadership vacuums.
The forum expressed concern about false promises misleading loyal PDP members. They warned such tactics threaten political fairness and Nigeria’s democratic progress. Many believe they’ll find better opportunities in APC.
Presidential Intervention Sought
The elders urgently appealed to President Bola Tinubu: “We call on President Tinubu to curb Matawalle’s excessive interference.” They described the minister’s actions as politically desperate. The forum believes they endanger fair competition principles.
Recent Zamfara reports indicate significant defection numbers. Over 24,000 PDP members across six local governments have reportedly joined APC. This includes former party executives and elders.
