Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, has asserted that former Governor Godwin Obaseki cannot be compelled to return to the state against his will.
This statement responds to Edo State Government calls for Obaseki to address alleged financial misconduct during his tenure. The PDP maintains the ex-governor holds constitutional rights to reside anywhere in Nigeria.
“Former Governor Obaseki is a free citizen of Nigeria,” Aziegbemi declared. “He may reside wherever he chooses. Records show he previously engaged the EFCC regarding Edo’s finances during his administration. No formal invitation from any agency exists.”
The party chairman criticized state officials for making public demands. He deemed such actions inappropriate and demeaning. Aziegbemi warned against undermining Obaseki’s legacy.
“Government pressure for his return under intimidation is unacceptable,” Aziegbemi emphasized. “Obaseki will return to Edo State when he decides. Not because officials demand it.”
The PDP reaffirmed it would not tolerate attempts to discredit the former governor’s eight-year administration through coercive tactics.
