The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) crisis deepened after former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido threatened legal action over his unsuccessful bid to obtain the party’s national chairmanship nomination form.
Lamido’s protest emerged amid internal party discontent following the endorsement of former Minister of Special Duties Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as consensus candidate. The decision precedes the PDP national convention scheduled for November 15-16 in Ibadan.
PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi swiftly dismissed Lamido’s stance. He emphasized the party’s determination to stay focused on rebuilding efforts.
“We are progressing forward and won’t let anyone derail our preparations,” Abdullahi stated. “The deadline for form submissions was October 22. Latecomers are merely staging drama.”
He accused certain members of undermining party interests. Abdullahi also cautioned media against amplifying distractions.
“Northern leaders made their decision,” he challenged. “Why is this case different? Let Lamido proceed to court.” Abdullahi suggested some were acting against the PDP.
The spokesman defended Turaki’s consensus selection. He noted it followed PDP traditions where governors and stakeholders determine leadership.
“Previously, chairmen emerged through individual nominations. Now four northern governors collaborated on this candidate,” Abdullahi explained. He criticized past beneficiaries of the system who now oppose it.
Abdullahi dismissed Lamido’s visit to the party headquarters as theatrical. He clarified that forms were only available at Legacy House, not Wadata Plaza.
