Former Senate President Bukola Saraki, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido are reportedly leading a new initiative. Their goal is to rescue the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from a deepening internal crisis. Many stakeholders fear the party faces “total destruction” if the issues are not addressed.
The proposed solution involves forming a National Caretaker Committee. This committee would manage the party’s affairs. It would serve until an inclusive national convention can be organized.
This initiative is gaining significant traction. Multiple crises are currently plaguing the PDP. These layers of conflict make the caretaker committee proposal urgent.
The previous National Working Committee (NWC)’s four-year tenure ends on December 10. Furthermore, the new leadership elected last month at the Ibadan convention faces legal challenges. Alhaji Kabiru Tanimu heads this disputed leadership.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) website, Ambassador Umar Damagum is the recognized National Chairman. Senator Samuel Anyanwu is the National Secretary. This situation causes legal ambiguity and a clear lack of unified authority within the party.
Sources indicate that the Federal High Court’s next ruling will likely invalidate the Ibadan convention. This is because it reportedly failed to meet constitutional pre-convention requirements.
Without an immediate Caretaker Committee, the PDP risks being left without a legally recognized administrative body.
If formed, the Caretaker Committee would include representatives from all rival factions. Its primary duty would be to organize an inclusive national convention.
The ongoing infighting and leadership confusion now threaten the PDP’s participation in upcoming off-season governorship elections. These uncertainties risk candidate involvement in the June 20, 2026 Ekiti State election. They also affect the August 8, 2026 Osun State election.
INEC guidelines state that only the recognized National Chairman and National Secretary can receive the access code. This code is crucial for uploading candidate details.
Ambassador Damagum and Senator Anyanwu belong to opposing factions. Damagum transferred leadership to Tanimu’s group. Anyanwu, however, is allied with Wike. This division creates a major hurdle for the party. They struggle to obtain and use the necessary access code.
Reports suggest the crisis has already led to Governor Ademola Adeleke’s exit. The Osun State Governor is reportedly seeking re-election under the Accord Party banner.
A meeting of concerned stakeholders is being planned, possibly this week. Its aim is to officially endorse the Caretaker Committee idea. Many see it as the only “pragmatic way out” for the PDP.
A source confirmed that Senator Bukola Saraki first proposed the National Caretaker Committee weeks ago. Saraki has been a key figure in reconciliation efforts. His loyalists, alongside those allied with Minister Wike and former Governor Lamido, have advanced the project significantly.
The source added that these efforts have reached a critical point. The current NWC tenure expires on December 10. Also, the November 15 Ibadan gathering has a legally invalid basis. Therefore, a National Caretaker Committee is seen as the only practical solution for the PDP.
A PDP legislator in Abuja stated that all factions know the Federal High Court’s next ruling is imminent. It will likely focus on unfulfilled constitutional conditions before the Ibadan convention. Without forming a Caretaker Committee immediately, the party risks being in limbo.
The PDP faces a severe administrative crisis, given the tight deadlines for the Ekiti election. The access code was due for collection on November 10. The final upload deadline is December 22.
