Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees, identifies constitutional disobedience and personal ambition as the core causes of the party’s ongoing crisis. During an Arise News interview, Ohuabunwa declared his faction’s commitment to resolving the PDP’s challenges while criticizing former leaders’ loss of moral direction.
Constitutional Disregard Breeds Instability
Ohuabunwa stated, “Disobedience to our constitution brought us here. Following our rules would have prevented this situation.” He lamented the party’s failure to learn from past mistakes after losing power in 2015. The PDP established the Ekweremadu Committee to investigate that defeat. Its recommendations were never implemented.
Presidential Ambitions Fuel Conflicts
“Every PDP crisis centers on presidential aspirations,” Ohuabunwa observed. These ambitions create clashes where personal interests overshadow party welfare. He criticized members who defect and return expecting immediate leadership roles. The party constitution requires returning members to lose seniority and restart. But this rule is routinely ignored.
Succession Crisis After Ayu’s Exit
Ohuabunwa highlighted mishandled succession following former Chairman Iyorchia Ayu’s departure. “The North Central should have produced Ayu’s replacement,” he explained. Ambassador Damagum stepped in temporarily as Deputy National Chairman. But this became a prolonged arrangement. Meanwhile, key officers like the National Secretary were suspended. This weakened the party’s foundation.
Unwavering Party Loyalty
Despite the turmoil, Ohuabunwa affirmed his commitment. “I’ve been a PDP member since inception. I never left,” he stated. He remained loyal even when his home state of Abia came under another party. The senator contrasted this with others who defect when unsatisfied. He emphasized investing personal resources to sustain the party.
