The crisis within Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has deepened as Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and fellow governors regroup to challenge the faction led by former Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike. This mobilization comes ahead of the party’s crucial National Elective Convention.
Despite preparations for the November convention in Ibadan, PDP remains divided. Internal conflicts involve control of party structures, zonal leadership, and convention arrangements. Wike’s supporters accuse acting National Chairman Umar Damagum’s leadership of bias. They cite unresolved disputes in the South-South zone.
Court Intervention and Mutual Suspensions
Tensions escalated significantly last Friday. A Federal High Court in Abuja issued an interim injunction blocking the convention. The ruling demands PDP compliance with its constitution and electoral laws before proceeding.
In a rapid sequence of events, the Damagum-led National Working Committee suspended key officials on Saturday. Those removed include National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade. They faced allegations of anti-party activities.
The Anyanwu faction retaliated immediately. They suspended Damagum, spokesman Debo Ologunagba, and Deputy Chairman Taofeek Arapaja. Financial misconduct and incompetence were cited as reasons.
Makinde’s Countermove Against Wike Camp
Sources close to Governor Makinde revealed strategic meetings are underway. The Oyo governor and allies aim to overturn the court injunction. Their goal is to regain control of party direction.
“We are not folding our hands,” a source stated. “With majority support, we’re discussing how to appeal the judgment. Convention preparations must continue.”
Condemnation of Court Ruling
Former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim condemned the convention halt. He called it “a calculated move to weaken Nigeria’s opposition.” Hashim alleged judicial weaponization against PDP.
“Both external pressures and internal sabotage aim to stifle PDP,” he asserted. “True democrats will resist attempts to destroy multiparty democracy.” The party’s future hangs in balance as factions mobilize.
