A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) has formally explained its recent disciplinary actions. This includes the expulsion of several high-profile members. Among them are two sitting state governors.
Senator Mao Ohuabunwa leads this BoT faction. He stated that these drastic measures were essential. The aim was to safeguard the party’s integrity from what he termed “internal subversion.”
Senator Ohuabunwa made this revelation during a BoT meeting in Abuja. The meeting took place on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Notably, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu were in attendance. Their presence highlighted the faction’s strong alignment.
Ohuabunwa described the expulsions as a painful decision. However, he insisted they were vital. He said they would uphold constitutional order and protect the party’s unity. He also affirmed the new leadership’s commitment to the rule of law. This refers to the faction led by Acting National Chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman.
The disciplinary actions target a rival PDP faction. This opposing group had earlier convened its own national convention in Ibadan.
Those reportedly expelled by the Abdulrahman-led faction include: Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, former Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, Kabiru Turaki (who was elected Chairman at the Ibadan Convention), Chief Bode George, and Taofeek Arapaja.
Meanwhile, the rival group, under newly elected Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, also carried out its own disciplinary actions. They expelled Nyesom Wike and others. This clearly illustrates the deep factionalism currently affecting the party.
Addressing the members, Senator Ohuabunwa stated, “We gather not merely as leaders, but as custodians of the party’s moral compass. We are entrusted with guiding the PDP through this difficult period with clarity and purpose.”
He continued, “Recent actions reflect our union’s resolve to uphold the rule of law. They also defend the integrity of our constitution.”
“Individuals whose conduct threatened the unity, stability, and credibility of our party have been sanctioned. This was done in line with established resolutions. These measures were not taken lightly. They became necessary to protect the institution. They also safeguard our party from internal subversion. Furthermore, they restore confidence among our members nationwide.”
