The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faces escalating internal conflict as more than 20 federal lawmakers threaten defection. The crisis centers on allegations that party leaders plan to impose an externally backed candidate for the National Woman Leader position.
In a joint statement by spokesperson Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the legislators criticized PDP leadership. They claim nomination forms were improperly issued to a candidate allegedly supported by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah. The governor belongs to the rival All Progressives Congress (APC).
Defection Ultimatum Issued
The lawmakers issued a firm ultimatum. They demand the nominee’s disqualification before Tuesday’s screening process. Failure to comply would trigger their exit before the national convention.
“Loyal PDP members from the South East face marginalization,” the statement lamented. “This imposition must be reversed.” The legislators warned that accommodating APC-aligned figures jeopardizes the party’s integrity.
Calls for Internal Transparency
The protesting lawmakers urged strict adherence to internal democracy. They emphasized that only verified party members should contest the position. External influence compromises PDP’s values, they argued.
“Transparency is non-negotiable for rebuilding Nigerians’ trust before 2027 elections,” the statement declared. Party screening for national offices proceeds Tuesday amid the tensions.
