Prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figures Eme Okoro and James Okpara have firmly endorsed Adolphus Wabara as the legitimate chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT). Both leaders rejected attempts to install former Senator Mao Ohuabunwa in the position.
Okoro Condemns Illegal BoT Leadership Change
Eme Okoro, a BoT member and former Abia State SSG, criticized Ohuabunwa’s purported inauguration. He stated it violated PDP’s constitution by occurring in a private residence. Okoro described this as “impunity” and dismissed claims of Umar Damagum’s removal as National Chairman.
He also questioned Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike’s involvement in the party’s internal crisis. Okoro emphasized that such actions undermine democratic processes within the PDP.
Okpara Warns Against Convention Sabotage
Former Abia Housing Commissioner James Okpara echoed these concerns. He declared both Wabara’s removal and Damagum’s ousting “cannot stand.” Okpara strongly criticized individuals opposing the PDP’s upcoming national convention.
He stated: “The national convention is our party’s soul. It determines our political direction. Anyone secretly or openly working to stop it doesn’t wish PDP well.” Okpara labeled such actions as unpatriotic and illegal threats to the party’s survival.
Leadership Crisis Intensifies
The dual rejections highlight deepening divisions within Nigeria’s main opposition party. Both chieftains maintain that adherence to constitutional processes remains crucial. They argue that sidelining established leadership jeopardizes PDP’s stability ahead of critical elections.
